Delivering (and Soliciting) Richer Feedback

COIN and related tools for giving difficult feedback well—and a parallel path for soliciting richer upward and peer feedback so messages actually land.

Constructive feedback unlocks better performance and fosters professional growth and development, yet many lawyers stumble with providing this essential feedback. The problem is often a lack of trust and technique for navigating difficult feedback conversations. In this session, we unpack the psychological barriers to giving feedback and introduce a framework (COIN) to structure difficult feedback conversations, allowing lawyers to support psychological safety, avoid common pitfalls, and most importantly, ensure their message lands.

Additionally, or as a separate section, we tackle the challenge of soliciting richer feedback. Rather than wait for feedback to come to them, lawyers must learn to own their role in their firm's feedback culture by seeking out feedback from others. Whether you are a junior lawyer looking for feedback to develop your skills or a supervisor seeking upward feedback from your team members about your leadership style, your ability to draw out honest feedback from others will help you supercharge your career growth.
